Form 2290 IRS End-of-Year Downtime FAQ

Each year, the IRS places the Form 2290 e-File system offline for scheduled end-of-year maintenance. Below are answers to the most common questions we receive during this period so you know what to expect and how to stay compliant.

Can I still e-file Form 2290 during the IRS shutdown?

Yes. You can still e-file your Form 2290 online with 2290Pro.com while the IRS e-File system is offline. We will securely receive and queue your 2290 return so it can be processed immediately when the IRS systems return online (typically mid-January).

Why haven't I received my watermarked Schedule 1?

The IRS requires an approved Form 2290 before a watermarked Schedule 1 can be issued. While the IRS e-File system is offline for annual maintenance, no Form 2290 filings can be processed or approved by the IRS, and no watermarked Schedule 1 documents can be issued by any provider.

My vehicle tags are expiring. What are my options?

An approved and watermarked Schedule 1 is required by the IRS before states or third parties can issue or renew vehicle registrations. Because this is a system-wide IRS outage, there is no way for any filing service to obtain this document until the IRS systems are back online.

We recommend contacting your state DMV or tag agent directly to ask whether they offer temporary permits, grace periods, or extensions during the IRS shutdown. Availability varies by state.

When will my Form 2290 be processed?

As soon as the IRS e-File system returns online—typically around mid-January—we will automatically process your Form 2290 return. Once approved, you will receive an email with your watermarked Schedule 1. You can also log in to your 2290Pro.com account at any time to download it.
